The Ficus is a versatile and popular houseplant belonging to the mulberry family (Moraceae), a family of approximately 750 species of trees, shrubs, and climbers. This sap is toxic and irritating, so caution when pruning is advised.

Within the genus Ficus there are several well-known species, such as:

The soil should dry slightly between waterings; overwatering can cause root rot and yellowing leaves. Ficus trees like stability: moving them can lead to temporary leaf loss. Prune in spring or fall to keep the plant in shape, and wear gloves because of the irritating white sap.
