The Trachycarpus immediately stands out with its large, fan-shaped leaves that are a fresh green and exude an exotic, tropical ambiance. The sturdy trunk is covered in fibers, creating a robust and natural look. This palm is a real eye-catcher, ideal for adding a tropical touch to your living space or garden, both indoors and outdoors.

Location

The Trachycarpus is very versatile and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use:

• Outdoors: Place the palm in a sunny to partially shaded spot. The Trachycarpus also tolerates cold better than many other palms and is therefore hardy down to about -15°C, depending on the conditions. Protect it with fleece in case of severe frost.

• Indoors: Place the plant in a bright spot, but avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal.

Soil and pot size

• Use a well-draining, airy potting soil that prevents waterlogging. A mixture of standard potting soil with a little extra perlite or sand works well.

• Make sure the pot has drainage holes so that excess water can drain away.

• For outdoor planting, a nutritious, slightly acidic to neutral garden soil is ideal.

Water needs and care

• Water the Trachycarpus regularly, especially during the growing season (spring and summer). The topsoil may dry out slightly, but never allow it to dry out completely.

• In winter, give less water, depending on the temperature and humidity.

• Feed the palm every 4–6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season.

• Remove any dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy and prevent mold formation.

Extra tips

• The Trachycarpus thrives in high humidity, especially indoors. Occasionally misting the leaves can help.

• When repotting, it's important to handle the roots carefully, as they are quite fragile. Spring is the best time to repot.
